If you are a financial advisor in need of vision, optimism, and opportunity, this blog post is for you. Early in my career as a financial advisor, I became acquainted with a gentleman by the name of Frank. Frank was a very successful advisor in his early 60s, and I was in my early 20s. From the time I first met him, he would always inquire about how I was doing and if there was anything he could do to assist me. From time to time I would ask him a technical planning question and he would authoritatively respond. On one occasion I asked Frank how he became so successful as a financial advisor, and his response was revelatory. He simply said, “Because I am surrounded with opportunity.”

Every day, he focused on what he could do to grow and retain his business. He understood the power of a referral from a satisfied client, and he became more than an advisor to his clients — he became their friend, conducted monthly seminars for members of the community regarding financial planning needs and concerns, volunteered for community service projects, sent monthly newsletters to clients and prospects that helped demonstrate his thought leadership, educated himself and possessed most of the major industry credentials, and the list goes on and on. For me, one of Frank’s most prized opportunities was to give of himself to anyone having a need, including myself. His success in business and in life is no mystery to those of us who knew Frank.
